Irisberto Herrera

Irisberto Herrera (born December 7, 1968 in Las Tunas ) is a Cuban- Spanish chess player .

He won the Cuban individual junior championship in 1986. He was international champion in 1989. He was Cuban individual champion in 1996, shared with Julio Becerra . In the same year he played for the Cuban national team at the Chess Olympiad . Since 1999 he has held the title of chess grandmaster . His Elo rating is 2438 (as of October 2015), but he is listed as inactive by FIDE because he did not play an Elo-rated game after the 2012/13 Madrid Team Championship. In July 1998 he reached his highest rating of 2487. In the Spanish team championship he played in 2007 and 2008 for CA Reverté Albox .

Since 1996, he has spent more time in Galicia, Spain than in his native Cuba and decided to take Spanish citizenship. Since 2007 he has been registered with FIDE for the Spanish federation, but after 2004 he only played team tournaments at Spanish and regional level. He has been teaching chess in several schools in Madrid since 2006 and organizes chess tournaments.
