Čair ( Macedonian Чаир ; Albanian Çairi ; from Turkish Çayır ) is the smallest Opština of North Macedonia , one of the ten districts of the capital Skopje . In it is the historic city center, which was mostly built during the Ottoman period.
It is one of the most touristic parts of the city. The old town with its caravanserais , the centuries-old mosques (including the Mustafa Pascha mosque ), the reconstructed Kale fortress , the old bazaar and Skanderbeg Square are attractive .
geography
Čair is located on the east bank of the Vardar River in the northern part of the historical center of Skopje, opposite the new city center. It borders the Centar district to the southwest , Karpoš to the west, Butel to the north and Gazi Baba to the east.
population
According to the last census from 2002, Čair has 64,773 inhabitants. With 18,400 inhabitants per square kilometer, it has a very high population density (the highest in Macedonia) and is home to 3.2 percent of the total Macedonian population.
Among the ethnic groups in the district are an Albanian majority with 36,921 inhabitants, 15,628 Macedonians , 4,500 Turks , 3,083 Roma , 2950 Bosniaks and others.
