Mustafa Pasha Mosque

The Mustafa Pascha Mosque ( Albanian  Xhamia e Mustafa Pashës , Macedonian Мустафа-пашина џамија , Turkish Mustafa Paşa Cami ) is located in the north Macedonian capital Skopje . It is one of the most important Ottoman architectural monuments in the country.

Located on a raised foundation , the mosque stands at the intersection of Prohor Pcinski and Svekarska streets in the oldest part of the city - Čair (alb. Çairi ). It is located northeast of the medieval Kales / Kalaja (in German city castle) and west of the Ottoman old town in the immediate vicinity of the International Balkan University .

Construction

The central part of the mosque is the prayer room with its dome, whose diameter is 16.3 meters. Inside it is decorated with many arabesques . The prayer room is followed by the marble-white portico , which is supported by four marble columns. It is covered by three smaller domes and its pillars are connected by round arches. The 47 meter high limestone minaret rises on the western corner of the main building .

The building was in the last decade of the 15th century by order of Mustafa Pasha, Grand Vizier of the Sultan Selim I. built.

The entire complex was renovated in the 2000s.

The mosque today

From the medieval mosque complex, in addition to the mosque, there is also the Türbe (in English: mausoleum) of the builder who died in 1519, which was severely destroyed by the severe earthquake in 1963; his daughter's sarcophagus and a well are present.
