Alexander Ipatov ( Ukrainian Олександр Іпатов ; born July 16, 1993 in Lviv ) is a Ukrainian chess grandmaster who switched to the Spanish Chess Federation in January 2009 and played for the Turkish Chess Federation from February 2012. He ended his career as a professional chess player in August 2016.

Life

When he was four years old, his father taught him to play chess. After four years of training he experienced his first success in March 2003 as the vice-champion of the Ukrainian U10. He qualified for the U10 World Cup in Greece, where he finished eleventh. In 2007 he was U14 vice-champion in Ukraine and was ranked 8th at the U14 Youth Chess World Cup in Turkey. In 2008 Ipatov was named International Master (IM), he fulfilled the required standards in July 2006 at the Inavtomarket Open in Minsk , in February 2008 at the Moscow Open and in June 2008 at the Alushta Summer . Alexander Ipatov has been Grandmaster (GM) since 2011, and he met the required standards at the Moscow Open in February 2010, the 27th Open in Cappelle-la-Grande in February and March 2011 and the Open in Naxçıvan in April and May 2011. 2012 won Ipatov won the junior world champion title in Athens . He got 10 points from 13 games and had the better evaluation compared to the tied Richárd Rapport . As a junior world champion Ipatov was for the Chess World Cup 2013 qualifying, failed in this, however, already in the first round of Wesley So . In November 2014 he won the Turkish individual championship in Buldan .

With the Turkish national team he took part in the 2012 and 2014 Chess Olympiads , the 2013 World Team Championships and the 2013 and 2015 European Team Championships. In the German Federal Chess League, Ipatov played for SK Turm Emsdetten from the 2011/12 season to the 2015/16 season . In France he has played for Bois-Colombes since the 2013/14 season . With Club d'Escacs Barberà , where he has been playing since 2007, he achieved first place in the Primera División of the Spanish team championship in 2009 and thus rose to the top division, the División de Honor, but the team was relegated again in 2010 . In Turkey he played for İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi Spor Kulübü , in Ukraine for Law Academy Charkiw , where he studied law.

After the Chess Olympiad 2016 in Baku , where he helped the Turkish national team to a sixth place, which is their highest ever position, finished Ipatov his career as a professional chess player. He justified this step with the concern that he would not be able to support his future family with playing chess alone and with the growing pressure to perform in professional chess. He is currently studying in St. Louis .

Alexander Ipatov gives chess lessons on the Internet and comments on major chess tournaments. His most important coaches so far are the Greek GM Efstratios Grivas and the Serbian IM Miodrag Perunović. In the past he was trained by V. Sherbakov, A. Khirpach, V. Zheliandinov, A. Hermanov and M. Kozakov.
