Pavel Eljanov ( Ukrainian Павло Ельянов * 10. May 1983 in Kharkiv ) is a Ukrainian chess - Grand Master .

Life

Pavel Eljanow comes from the Kharkiv chess school, his father Volodymyr had a chess book printer and was a chess trainer himself .

Eljanow was the undivided winner at the strong open in Amsterdam 2005. He also won the top tournament Montreal Empresa International 2006. Another success was the victory at Corus B in Wijk aan Zee in 2007. In 2009 he won the tournament in Bosna Sarajevo with 1.5 points Lead over Borki Predojević and Wang Hao . Eljanow called this the greatest success of his career so far. In 2010 he won the Grand Prix tournament in Astrakhan and the Politiken Cup in Copenhagen . In October 2010 he won the Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk with the Ukraine, for which he played on board 3 . In 2013 he won the 14th Karpov tournament in Poikowski . In April 2014 he won the B-tournament of the Shamkir Chess, which was held as a memorial tournament for the Azerbaijani grandmaster Vüqar Həşimov , who died in January . Eljanow is also active as a second to Boris Gelfand .

Since 2005, Eljanow has participated in the World Chess Cup six times . In 2015 he achieved his best result when he surprisingly reached the semi-finals among 128 participants, in which he was narrowly defeated by the eventual winner Sergei Karjakin . Among other things, he had beaten Hikaru Nakamura in the quarterfinals . As a result of this success, he gained 36 Elo points and advanced from 32nd to 13th in the world rankings.

Eljanow took part with the Ukrainian team in all eight chess Olympiads since 2004. The team won the competition in 2004 and 2010 and came third in 2012 and second in 2016 , Eljanow also achieved the second best individual result in 2010 and the third best individual result on the third board in 2014 . In addition, Eljanov took part in the World Team Championships in 2005, 2011 and 2015 and the European Team Championships in 2003, 2005, 2009, 2011 , 2015 and 2017.
