The Codex Bezae , also Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis, is a New Testament manuscript in Greek and Latin from the 5th century. Common symbols are D ea , often just D , also 05 Gregory-Aland ; δ 5 of sod; Vetus Latina Siglum d, No. 5 after Beuron.
history
It was the only Bible text from the first millennium known in the 16th century. The code takes its name from Theodor Beza , the successor of Johannes Calvin . Beza donated this codex to the University of Cambridge. According to Beza, the codex was previously in the monastery of St. Irenaeus near Lyon.
description
The Codex Bezae contains the four Gospels in the order of the Western manuscripts (Matthew, John, Luke, Mark) and part of the Acts of the Apostles. The Codex Bezae consists of 415 pages written in one column (26 × 21.5 cm). The left side is always Greek, the right side is Latin .
The Codex Bezae has a very peculiar text, the so-called Western Text, and is one of the most important text witnesses for this type of text. The Greek text of the Codex was assigned to Category IV by Kurt Aland . No agreement has yet been reached on the exact rating, but the tendency is to see it as an old review.
The Latin text is the oldest form of the Vetus Latina and is very similar to the Codex Veronensis and Codex Bobiensis .
