Categories of New Testament manuscripts

Kurt and Barbara Aland proposed in 1981 in The Text of the New Testament a division of the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament into five categories.

Category I.

Very special quality manuscripts that represent original text, e.g. B. the Alexandrian text . This category mainly includes papyri and uncial scripts up to the 3rd / 4th. Century, but also some minuscule "offer an old, valuable text that can even compete with that of the capitals , even in their top representatives."

Category II

Manuscripts of special quality, distinguished from those of Category I through external influence.

Category III

Manuscripts of their own character with independent text that play an important role in the history of the text. The text families f 1 , f 13 belong to this category .

Category IV

Manuscripts of the western text type (e.g. Codex Bezae ).

Category V

Byzantine text type manuscripts .

The New Testament manuscripts are designated with the sigla used in the table below . The leftmost column refers to the approximate dating of the manuscripts in the corresponding row. The Roman numerals I – V stand for the categories of manuscripts explained above.

  3. ^ The assignment of minuscule 2427 to the 14th century was made using paleography . It was only in 2006 that it was exposed as a fake from the 19th century. It contains the text of the Codex Vaticanus , so Aland correctly assigned it to Category I.
