Papyrus 9 (numbered after Gregory-Aland 9 ) is an early New Testament manuscript in Greek . It was first published as Oxyrhynchus Papyri III 402. The papyrus manuscript dates from the early 3rd century. The manuscript consists of a fragment of a leaf that contains verses 4: 11–12, 14–17 of 1. John and is described in one column on each page. It is the oldest known fragment of 1 John.
The manuscript was written very carelessly. The handwriting is rough and irregular, and the handwriting also contains some irregular spellings.
The Greek text of the Codex corresponds to the Alexandrian text type . Aland placed it in Category I a. But the manuscript is too short to be certain.
It was discovered in Oxyrhynchus ( Egypt ) and is currently housed in the Harvard Semitic Museum ( Houghton Library ) under the shelf mark MS Gr SM3736 in Cambridge .
