Alberich Degen (born August 25, 1625 in Zeil am Main , † November 24, 1686 in Ebrach ) was the 42nd abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Ebrach .

Life

Degen entered the Ebrach monastery in the Steigerwald in 1647 . Two years later he was ordained a priest. In 1654 he became the administrator of the Ebracher Amtshof in Würzburg . In 1658 he was elected abbot of the monastery.

He was a personal advisor to Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn . In 1664 Degen became vicar general of the entire Upper German Cistercian congregation. He initiated the production of a history of the monastery of Ebrach. Degen is credited with transferring the Silvaner from Austria to Franconia . A memorial stone in the Würzburg vineyard site " Stein " reminds of Degen's services to Franconian viticulture. The historic stone was discovered during the land consolidation and can be viewed in the cellar of the Citizens' Hospital of the Holy Spirit in Würzburg. Alberich Degen died on November 24, 1686.

A personal coat of arms has come down to us for Abbot Alberich Degen. It can be found on the old Ebracher Hof in Bamberg, which this abbot had built. Description : Two crossed, silver swords with gold shafts in red.
