Western text type

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Western text type is one of several New Testament text types that New Testament textual criticism distinguishes between. It is the predominant text form in the old Latin translations from Greek, as well as in quotations from certain Christian authors of the 2nd and 3rd centuries , including Cyprian , Tertullian and Irenaeus of Lyon . The Western text type often has additions to the other text types and is longer overall. Contrary to its name, the text type does not come from the West, but has this name because it was predominant in the West at times. In most cases, the Western text type is considered to be inferior in quality to the other text types despite its old age. Kurt and Barbara Aland give manuscripts of the Western text type Category IV .
