description
The Greek text of this codex is highly valued by text critics as it represents an early form of the Western text type . This becomes clear above all through the frequent interpolations and partly also through the interpretive revisions in corrections to the text. Modern critical editions of the New Testament are created by the eclectic method , in which the preferred reading is determined based on the individual cases that exist in the numerous variants of earlier manuscripts and versions. During this process, Claromontanus is often called in as a kind of "outside observer" when more closely related (and thus interdependent) codices are compiled with the letters of Paul: Codex Alexandrinus , Codex Vaticanus , Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus . Similarly, the Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis is used for the text history of the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles .
The Codex Claromontanus contains other valuable documents:
- A stichometric catalog of the Old and New Testament canons of unknown date has been incorporated into the code. The Philippians , 1st and 2nd Thessalonians and Hebrews are missing from this list . However, some works are included that are no longer considered canonical today: Barnabas Epistle , The Shepherd of Hermas , 3rd Epistle to the Corinthians , Acts of Paul and Revelation of Peter .
- Fragments of Phaethon by Euripides have been overwritten with Christian text on two palimpsest leaves (nos. 162 and 163) . They have been removed from the code and are listed in the Bibliothèque Nationale under Cod. Gr. 107 B kept.
