The Codex Beratinus ( Gregory-Aland no. 043 or Φ; von Soden ε 17) is a Greek manuscript of the New Testament that is dated to the 6th century. The manuscript is written on purple-dyed parchment and is not completely preserved.

The manuscript, together with Codex Beratinus 2 , has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Document (Albania) since 2005 .

description

The manuscript consists of the Gospels of Matthew and Mark with gaps (Matthew 1,1–6,3; 7,26–8,7; 18,23–19,3; Mark 14,62 – fin.). It is written in silver ink on 190 sheets of purple parchment in a format of 31 by 27 centimeters . The text is in two columns with 17 lines of eight to twelve letters each.

The letters of the uncials are simple, round and square. Accents, spiritus asper and lenis are missing. The nouns sacrae ΙΣ , ΘΣ , ΚΣ , ΥΣ ( Jesus , God , Lord , Son ) are written in gold ink. Old Testament quotes are highlighted.

The manuscript is counted among the purple codes with the Codex purpureus Rossanensis , the Codex Sinopensis and the Codex Petropolitanus Purpureus .

The ancient Greek text of the Codex represents the Byzantine text type and is assigned to Category V.

This manuscript has the long addition in Matthew 20:28 (like Codex Bezae ).

history

In 1356 the manuscript was in the Johannes Theologos Monastery in the city of Berat . This is where the name Codex Beratinus comes from . In 1868 the Archbishop Anthymus D. Alexoudes mentioned the Codex and Johannes Sakkelion told Louis Duchesne about it in 1875 on Patmos .

The codex is kept in the State Archives (No. 1) in Tirana .
