The Codex purpureus Rossanensis ( Purple Codex of Rossano , Gregory-Aland No. 042 or Σ) is an important illustrated Greek gospel book .

Name and content

The Gospels are kept in the Diocesan Museum of the Calabrian city of Rossano . It owes its name to the fact that the 188 of the original 400 parchment leaves that have been preserved are colored purple .

The richly illustrated text contains the full Gospel of Matthew , part of the Gospel of Mark and a letter from Eusebius of Caesarea with a gap in Mark 16, 14-20.

history

The book was probably written in Syria in the 6th century and brought to Calabria by monks fleeing the Arabs in the 7th century. Oscar von Gebhardt and Adolf Harnack discovered the codex in 1879 and published a description.

In 2015 the Code was declared a World Document Heritage by UNESCO .
