Papyrus 63 (named after Gregory-Aland with Sigel 63 ) is an early Greek copy of the New Testament . This papyrus manuscript contains a part of the Gospel of John and sections "interpretations" to it. Only verses 3: 14-18 and 4: 9-10 have survived. By means of Paläographie had been assigned to the 4th or 5th century.

The Greek text of the Codex represents the Alexandrian text type , but also contains some Byzantine readings. Kurt Aland placed him in Category II .

In chapter 3 of the Gospel of John, the following verses have been preserved in Greek:

The text variant υιον αυτου can be found in John 3:16 . It is also supported by the manuscripts א 2 , A , L, Θ, Ψ, 063 , 083 , 086 , 0113 , f 1 , f 13 , Byz and Didache .

A special feature of Papyrus 63 is that it is not a manuscript that only contains the biblical text, but also “interpretations”. After a passage from John's text, the heading ερμηνια (ἑρμηνεῖα / hermeneia ) follows several times , followed by comments. Unlike previously assumed, these are not commentary interpretations in the actual sense, but so-called Bible oracles . These contained only certain, well-suited excerpts from the Bible and were probably used to open them randomly and thus bring about a kind of oracle. Comparable papyri include Papyrus 55 and Papyrus 80 . Another special feature is that in Papyrus 63 the "interpretations" are both in Greek and have been translated into Coptic .

The manuscript is in the papyrus collection of the Egyptian Museum in Berlin and is kept under inventory number P. 11914.
