Papyrus 72 (named after Gregory-Aland with Sigel 72 ) is another name for Papyrus Bodmer VII – IX . It is an early papyrus manuscript of the New Testament . It contains the complete text of the 1st Peter epistle , 2nd Peter epistle and the epistle of Jude . It was dated to the 3rd or 4th century by means of paleography .

It is the oldest known manuscript of these letters, although some verses by Jude are contained in fragment 78 (P. Oxy. 2684).

The document also contains the birth of Mary , the apocryphal correspondence of 3rd Corinthians , the eleventh of the Odes of Solomon , Melito's homily on the Passover, the fragment of a hymn, the Apology of Phileas and Psalm 33 and 34. It was written on 72 sheets ( 14.5 × 16 cm) with 16-20 lines per page in documentary handwriting.

The Greek text of the Codex represents the Alexandrian text type . According to Aland , 1 and 2 Peter are normal texts, Jude is a free text and both have certain peculiarities. Aland placed it in Category I a. It is close to the Codex Vaticanus and Codex Alexandrinus .

Part of the manuscript is currently in the Bibliotheca Bodmeriana in Cologny near Geneva, and another part in the Vatican Library in Rome .
