Papyrus 1 (numbered after Gregory-Aland ¹ ) is an early copy of the New Testament in Greek . It is a papyrus manuscript of the Gospel of Matthew and is dated to the 3rd century. ${\ displaystyle {\ mathfrak {P}}}$

It is currently kept in the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania under the signature E 2746. It was discovered in Oxyrhynchus in Egypt. The manuscript is a fragment of a sheet of paper, folded in such a way that there are two pages with one column per page. There are 27–29 lines on each page, the dimensions are approximately 14.7 cm × 15 cm. The text from Matthew 1: 1–9.12 and 13, 14–20 is still preserved. It was dated to the early 3rd century by means of paleography .

The text of the codex contains nouns sacra and can be assigned to the Alexandrian text type . Aland placed it in Category I a.

${\ displaystyle {\ mathfrak {P}}}$ ¹ follows the text of the Codex Vaticanus . Most of the deviations are found in the pronunciation of the names in the lineage of Jesus .

history

Bernard Pyne Grenfell and Arthur Surridge Hunt discovered the papyrus at Oxyrhynchus in Egypt on the second day of the excavations in the winter of 1896–1897. Their finds were published in the first volume of The Oxyrhynchus Papyri in 1898.
