Papyrus 45 ( 45 or P. Chester Beatty I ) is an early New Testament manuscript and part of the Chester Beatty papyri . It was probably created in Egypt around the year 250 AD . It contains the texts of the Gospel of Matthew 20-21 and 25-26; the Gospel of Mark 4–9 and 11–12; of Luke 6-7 and 9-14; of the Gospel of John 4–5 and 10–11 and Acts 4–17. The manuscript is currently held in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin , Ireland . A sheet (folio), however, with Matthew 25.41–26.39 is in the Austrian National Library in Vienna ( Pap. Vindob. G. 31974).

Condition of the manuscript

P. Chester Beatty I, (P 45 ) Folio 13-14, with parts of the Gospel according to Luke

The manuscript is badly damaged and fragmented. The papyrus was bound in a codex that probably consisted of 220 pages. However, only 30 pages have survived (2 from Matthew, 6 from Mark, 7 from Luke, 2 from John and 13 from Acts). All pages have lacunae (gaps), very few lines are complete. The pages of Matthew and John are the smallest. The original pages were about 25 × 20 cm. In contrast to many other surviving 3rd century manuscripts containing the Gospels, Catholic Letters, or Pauline letters , this manuscript contained more than one grouping of New Testament texts. This hypothesis is based on the use of the collection of two leaves, a simple quire (25 leaves), as most codices had.

Text character

It was difficult to determine the type of text because of the extent of the destruction. The manuscript was acquired by Alfred Chester Beatty in the first half of the 20th century and published in The Chester Beatty Biblical Papyri, Descriptions and Texts of Twelve Manuscripts on Papyrus of the Greek Bible by Frederic G. Kenyon in 1933. In this work, Kenyon identifies the text type as Caesarean , following the definition of Burnett Hillman Streeter . Hollis Huston criticized Kenyon's transcription of many partially preserved words and came to the conclusion that Chapters 6 and 11 of Markus in 45 do not fit seamlessly into any text type, especially Caesarean, since the manuscript refers to these specific texts for each text type Would pre-date 4th or 5th century.
