He was Professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Princeton Theological Seminary . He was one of the editors of the Novum Testamentum Graece by Nestle and Aland.

Life

Bruce Metzger graduated from Lebanon Valley College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1935 and graduated from Princeton Seminary with a Bachelor of Theology in 1938 . In 1939 he was ordained pastor of the Presbyterian Church . In 1942 he received his doctorate in classical philology from Princeton University . In 1938 he began teaching at Princeton Theological Seminary. He was part of the New Testament Department there for 46 years. In 1978 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy . Since 1986 he was a member of the American Philosophical Society .

Works

Bruce Metzger published for eight decades, his first article in 1938 and his last book in 2006.

Metzger published numerous commentaries on Bible translations and wrote many books. He has worked on various new Bible translations, including the New Revised Standard Version and the Reader's Digest Bible . He was also one of the editors of the Greek New Testament of the United Bible Societies and of Nestle-Aland , the most important text editions of the Greek New Testament in recent decades.

Metzger's comments often contain critical comments that are intended to explain the literary and historical background of the Bible to the reader . For his view that the collection of the New Testament writings was not so much a role for the early Church as divine revelation , but the fact that the texts were written by eyewitnesses of the time or by their students, he was supported by strongly criticized fundamentalist groups.

Trivia

Bruce Metzger's students and employees are familiar with numerous anecdotes that highlight his hard work, knowledge and friendliness:

Ben Witherington tells of a Eusebius lecture given by Metzger, which was interrupted by an excited man waving a manuscript and shouting, “I have the oldest copy of the Gospel of Mark in Syriac !” Metzger kindly asked if he could have a look . After less than a minute he returned the manuscript and said: “Really very interesting, but not a Syrian copy of Markus. It is a Bohairian manuscript from the 6th century, which is not particularly remarkable. "
