Greek New Testament
There were several editions of the Greek Bible under the title Greek New Testament . An older version of the Bible under this name was published from 1857 to 1879 by Samuel Prideaux Tregelles .
Today's Greek New Testament is a Greek text edition of the New Testament . It was published by the American Bible Society , the National Bible Society of Scotland and the Württembergische Bibelgesellschaft , later joined by the Dutch Bible Society and the British and Foreign Bible Society . The first edition appeared in 1965 under the editors Kurt Aland , Matthew Black , Bruce M. Metzger and Allen Wikgren . The Institute for New Testament Text Research in Münster was involved in the first edition . It is the world's best-selling Greek text edition that is distributed today under the umbrella of the United Bible Societies .
Features of this edition of the Bible
This edition is less intended for scientists and academics at universities than for Bible translators. The apparatus of readings is mainly limited to those that are important for translation. The given readings are classified according to the degree of security according to the editors. Variants are quoted in full and not abbreviated. A second apparatus deals with the punctuation and the delimitation of text units. There is also a commentary volume that explains the editors' critical decisions. The security of the variants is classified with letters: A means the text is safe; B the text is almost certain; C the committee had difficulty deciding which option to prefer; D the committee had great difficulty in making a decision.
The terms
The text basis of the first edition from 1965 is the edition by Westcott and Hort , to which the texts and apparatus of the editions of Nestle, Bover, Merk, Vogels, Konstantin von Tischendorf and Hermann von Soden are compared . The papyri found so far and newly published text witnesses as well as the current publications by the experts were also taken into account. Variants in the orthography were ignored and the spelling was used according to the fifth edition of Walter Bauer's concise dictionary . The second edition 1968 has only a few changes to the first edition. Some variants were classified differently in terms of their degree of security.
The third edition in 1975 took place with a careful revision of the text. Proposals submitted by experts were discussed and the editors' experience with the text was incorporated. Most of the new proposals came from Kurt Aland, who brought the planned changes to the 26th edition of the Nestle-Aland into the discussion. Compared to the first edition with the text by Westcott and Hort, the text has been changed in about 500 places, according to the apparatus. The quotation index has been rebuilt, the punctuation apparatus revised. A later print of the 3rd edition in 1982 eliminated some differences to NA 26, the punctuation was changed.
With the fourth edition, all data has been recollated using photomechanical reproductions of the manuscripts. The text remains the same for the third edition and is identical to that of the Nestle-Aland of the 26th and 27th edition. The apparatus was changed, less significant variants removed. The apparatus has been revised on the subject of text delimitation and division into sections and paragraphs.
The fifth edition appeared in April 2014 and is identical to the text of the Editio Critica Maior and contains about 30 changes in the text compared to the 3rd / 4th edition . Edition in the Catholic letters .
