Hermann von Soden
Hans Karl Hermann von Soden (born August 16, 1852 in Cincinnati , † January 15, 1914 in Berlin ) was an Evangelical Lutheran theologian . His cataloging of the New Testament manuscripts was influential in researching the textual history of the New Testament ; he was also the editor of a major text-critical edition of the Greek New Testament.
Life
Hermann von Soden came from the noble family Soden . He studied at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , where he became a member of the Normannia Association . At the age of 29, he was appointed pastor in Dresden in 1881 . He was later transferred to St. Jacobi in Chemnitz as archdeacon .
From 1888 he was the first pastor at the Jerusalem Church in Berlin . Two years later, Soden taught as a private lecturer for the New Testament at Berlin University. In September 1893 he was appointed associate professor and in 1913 full professor.
In the following years he received extremely generous financial support from Elise König , who converted from Judaism to Christianity under his influence. With this support, Soden and Hans Lietzmann were able to send many employees to libraries and, through their preparatory work, to comprehensively present the New Testament with its development history in many readings. The results culminated in the extensive publication The Writings of the New Testament in their oldest accessible text form, based on their textual history . His edition of the Greek New Testament "has had the greatest impact on manual editions of the 20th century". However, the system of symbols introduced by Soden was very complicated to use.
In addition to his scientific work, von Soden did voluntary social work : He was chairman of the Berlin Association for the Protection of Children from Abuse and Abuse , a regional forerunner of the German Child Protection Association (DKSB).
As a church theorist, Soden further developed Emil Sulze's ideas , but also called for a reform of parochial structures, especially in metropolitan communities.
Hermann von Soden died on January 15, 1914 in Berlin at the age of 62. His grave is in Cemetery II of the Jerusalem and New Churches in Berlin-Kreuzberg . He rests there next to his wife Gabriele geb. von Schaedtler (1852–1925).
family
Hermann von Soden was the second eldest son of the lawyer Theodor von Soden (1825–1913), who came from Stuttgart. He worked as a teacher in Cincinnati in the early 1850s and returned to Esslingen am Neckar in 1856 . His mother was the teacher Clementine Camerer (1826-1893). His son Hans von Soden was an important church historian, and the ancient orientalist Wolfram von Soden was his grandson. The writer and women's rights activist Eugenie von Soden , born in Esslingen in 1858, was his younger sister.
