Konstantin Lerner ( Ukrainian Костянтин Лернер , scientific. Transliteration Konstantin Lerner , Russian Константин Зайвелевич Лернер / Konstantin Lerner Saiwelewitsch * 28. February 1950 in Odessa ; † 24. September 2011 in Herzlia , Israel ) was a Ukrainian chess master .

life and career

Kostjantyn Lerner, born in Odessa in 1950, was one of the top players in Soviet chess in the 1980s. In 1978 and 1982 he won the Ukrainian championship.

Lerner took part in five USSR championships , where he achieved his greatest sporting success with second place at the championship in Lviv in 1984 . His second best result came in fourth place in 1986 in Kiev , and in the same year FIDE named him Grandmaster . During the 1987 World Cup in Seville , he was one of Anatoly Karpov's seconds .

He won the Bad Wörishofen Chess Festival three times in a row (in 1998–2000) .

He was also successful in Tel Aviv 2001 and 2002, Rishon leTzion 2004, Giw'atajim 2005 and Herzlija 2005.

He also took part in the European Club Cup twice. In 1994 he played for the Ukrainian chess club M. Chigorin ShK Alushta . In 2002 he played for the Israeli chess club Hapoel Cellcom Kfar-Saba . In the German Chess League he played for PSV Duisburg from 1997 to 1999 .

In 1997 he took in Groningen at the FIDE - World Chess Championship in knockout system part, but lost in the first round of the Lithuanians eduardas rozentalis . In 2001 he emigrated to Israel. In 2004 he was third in the open Israeli championship in Ramat Aviv .

His last Elo number was 2515. His highest Elo number of 2605 he reached in July 1995, his best world ranking was the shared 41st place together with Julio Ernesto Granda Zúñiga and Vlastimil Hort in January 1987. He had a wife and a son.
