Julio Ernesto Granda Zúñiga (born February 25, 1967 in Camaná, Arequipa region ) is a Peruvian chess player .

Life

The third oldest of seven children, Granda Zúñiga grew up in rural Camaná. At the age of five he learned to play chess. He later received training from FIDE Master Javier García Toledo and IM Oscar Quiñones Carrillo . He is one of the few, if not the only, grandmasters with a rating that is usually over 2600 Elo points , who neither has a second nor, according to his own statements, prepares himself with the help of EDP. His game is intuitive and aggressive with a deep understanding of attack options. As a fruit farmer and without funding from the Peruvian state or the Peruvian Chess Federation (FPA), he does not have the financial resources like many other chess players among the top forty in the world rankings. Granda Zúñiga is known for sometimes being undetectable for a few weeks but reappearing. In 1998 he spoke of a supernatural apparition , a personal experience that made him quit playing chess for several years. In 2002, however, he began to play tournaments again.

Successes and tournament career

Development of Granda Zúñiga's Elo rating, January 1983 to April 2009

He became international champion in 1984 and grandmaster in 1986. He was last among the top 40 of the FIDE world rankings (his best world ranking position so far was 25th place) in the first half of 1998.

With the Peruvian national team, he took part in eleven chess Olympiads from 1986 up to and including 2014 , ten times on the first board with an overall result of 83.5 points from 133 games (+60 = 47 −26). At the Pan American team championship in 1987 in Junín , Argentina , he received an individual gold medal for his score of 4.5 out of 6 on the top board of the Peruvian national team.

After winning the Arequipa championship in 1976 as a child , his first major international success was winning the U14 World Cup in Mazatlán in 1980. For this he received the Laureles Deportivos sports award . This was followed a few years later by winning the Pan American Youth Championship in Lima (1984) as well as a large number of tournament successes in Havana (1986), Lyon , Barcelona and Seville (both 1990), Buenos Aires (1991) and New York (1992).

Another highlight was the 1993 victory in the zone tournament in Brasília with seven points from nine games. He was able to repeat this success in 1995 at the zone tournament in São Paulo . In 1993, Bent Larsen also won the International Open ( Abierto Internacional ) in Mar del Plata . From 1994 to 1997 and 2002 Granda Zúñiga won the Peruvian Individual Championship five times.

He won the American continental championship three times, namely in 2005 in Buenos Aires, 2007 in Cali and 2012 in Mar del Plata. Granda Zúñiga also defended his reputation as one of the strongest grandmasters in Latin America in 2008 with his victory at the 2nd Ibero-American Championship in Morelia . The English grandmaster John Emms wrote in his book The most amazing chess moves of all time that he would normally have thought the next move a simple overlook had it not been made by such a good player. The compensation for White consists in the fact that he drives the black knights back by increasing the speed , gains space and can initiate an attack on the king. In addition, the victim has a strong psychological effect and offers white good practical opportunities. Granda Zúñiga pondered this for 40 minutes.
