The Week in Chess

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Week in Chess (abbreviated to TWIC ) is a periodical online publication that has existed since 1994 and provides information about chess news .

For the chess-related online journalism had The Week in Chess , which the British chess expert Mark Crowther is published, a pioneering role. The original form was a weekly posting as a message within a newsgroup . “TWIC 1” appeared in the Usenet group rec.games.chess on September 17, 1994. TWIC was later published on Crowther's private website and, in 1998, moved to the address chesscenter.com . It can now be found under the URL theweekinchess.com .

The coverage extends to news, tournament results and (partially commented) games in PGN format . Within a short period of time, TWIC was recognized as the leading international source on the Internet in the field of chess news. Crowther benefited from the fact that many volunteers helped provide him with the results of chess tournaments and other news.

Despite the growing number of chess websites, The Week in Chess continues to hold a recognized position as a reliable news medium. Today, TWIC takes the form of a weekly newsletter . The website is updated daily for important chess events (it also contains an expanded review section ). TWIC is free of charge for users. It was financed through advertisements and the sale of books and software from the London Chess Center. As revenues remained below expectations, Crowther announced at the end of August 2012 that the London Chess Center's support for TWIC will be ended.
