He received chess training from FIDE master Carlos Pesantes (* 1951) and Pedro García Toledo (* 1949). With the Peruvian national team he took part in all seven chess Olympiads from 1986 to 1998 , most recently on the top board, with a positive overall result of 43.5 points from 83 games (+32 = 23 −28). He also represented Peru at the Pan-American Team Championship in 1987. He was able to win the Peruvian Individual Championship twice: in 1987 and 1999. Both championships were held in Lima. The 1999 tournament was won by Georgui Castañeda , who at that time was still registered for the Russian Chess Federation .

Henry Urday Cáceres has been Grand Master since 1992 . His Elo rating is 2482 (as of December 2018), which puts him in ninth place in the Peruvian Elo ranking, but he is inactive - his last rated chess game took place in 2001. He reached his highest Elo rating of 2490 in July 1992.

Urday Cáceres has been President of the Peruvian Chess Federation (FPA) since 2001. He was charged with simplifying , with the help of the association's treasurer, Mario Tovar Jaén, in 2001 the departure of a couple with their son to a youth world championship in Oropesa del Mar in Spain without valid papers after receiving a sum of money (the three never returned to Peru back), but was not convicted under civil law after several legal proceedings. In 2006, however, the Peruvian sports court ruled that he was no longer allowed to exercise any sporting function in Peru for three years. His term of office would have lasted until 2009. As his successor, Iturry Milton won the elections in which Urday Cáceres could no longer participate. The treasurer was banned for two years.
