Orestes Rodríguez Vargas
Orestes Rodríguez Vargas (born July 4, 1943 ) is a Peruvian chess player who plays for the Spanish Chess Federation.
Life
Orestes Rodríguez Vargas has his chess roots in the downtown district of Jesús María in the Peruvian capital Lima . Already a successful chess player in the 1960s, he set himself the goal of becoming a grandmaster and since he saw no adequate funding opportunities to achieve this goal in Peru, he moved to Spain in 1973 and played there in the Spanish team championship in 1976 for CA Condal Las Palmas , then for the Club d'escacs Vulcà , a club from Barcelona . With this he became Spanish team champion in 1980 , 1981 , 1982 , 1983 , 1984 , 1987 , 1989 and 1995 and took part in the European Club Cup three times , with the greatest success being reaching the semifinals in Moscow in 1984 .
successes
He took part in a total of seven Chess Olympiads with an overall result of 59 points from 90 games (+42 = 34 −14). His first chess Olympiad was the 1964 Olympics in Tel Aviv , where he played on the fourth board of the Peruvian national team. In 1970 , 1972 , 1978 and 1986 he played on the first board in Peru and in 1988 on the second board. At the 1992 Olympics in Manila , he played for Spain on the fourth board. His greatest success at the Chess Olympiad was an individual silver medal in 1978 in Buenos Aires for his score of 8 out of 10 on the first board.
He was Peruvian individual champion five times in a row from 1968 to 1972.
At the Senior European Championships in 2005, 2007, 2008 in Dresden and 2009 in Velden am Wörther See , he played for a selection of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia . In February 2007 he had the best individual result of all participants at the 9th Open European Senior Championship with 8.5 out of 9, ahead of Viktor Kortschnoi .
In 1972 he became International Master , and since 1978 he has held the title of Grand Master. His Elo rating is 2365 (as of November 2014), but he is listed as inactive because he has not played a rated game since the Catalan team championship in 2013. His highest rating to date was 2500 in January 1990.
