Mihai Șubă (born June 1, 1947 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian chess grandmaster who has Spanish citizenship and has been registered for the Spanish Chess Federation since 2017.

career

Șubă learned to play chess at the age of 18. He received the IM title in 1975 and the GM title in 1978. He was three times Romanian national champion (1980, 1981 and 1986). Șubă gained first international attention when he shared 2nd place in Băile Herculane behind Zoltán Ribli with Gyula Sax in 1982 . In the same year he was third behind Ribli and Vasily Smyslow at the interzonal tournament in Las Palmas and thus just missed the candidate cycle for the World Cup.

Șubă took first place in 1983 at the Dortmund Chess Days , 1985 at the Berlin Summer (Open) after a fine evaluation ahead of Viktor Kortschnoi , in the 1985 zone tournament in Prague (shared with József Pintér and Vlastimil Jansa ), and in 1987 in Timișoara. In 1983 he won third place in Tallinn , behind the winners Michail Tal and Rafael Vaganian, which he shared with Tigran Petrosjan and Jaan Ehlvest .

In 2008 he was together with Larry Kaufman world chess champion for seniors ; In 2011 he was European Senior Champion in Courmayeur .

Life

On the occasion of a tournament in London Șubă fled to the West with his son in 1988; on August 25, 1988, he applied for political asylum in Great Britain. He currently lives in Spain (as of January 2007).

He plays club chess in Romania for CS AEM Luxten Timișoara , in the Spanish team championship in 1995 for CE Santa Margarita , in 2000, 2001 and 2004 for CA Reverté Albox . He took part in the European Club Cup in 1993 and 1994 with AS RAT Bucharest and in 2002 with CA Reverté Albox .

National team

Șubă participated with Romania in the 1978 , 1980 , 1982 , 1984 , 1986 and 1992 Chess Olympiads . He also represented Romania at the 1985 World Team Championships and took part in three European Team Championships (1977 and 1992 for Romania, 1989 for England).

Hedgehog expert

Șubă is considered a pioneer and expert in the hedgehog position , about which he published the book The Hedgehog in 2000 . In his 1991 book Dynamic Chess Strategy , which became a bestseller, he referred among others. a. on his contributions to research into hedgehog position.

Others

In honor of Mihai Șubă, who celebrated his sixtieth birthday on June 1, 2007, the "Royal Tournament" was held from June 16 to June 26, 2007 in the Romanian city of Bazna, to which many companions from Șubă's active tournament career were invited have been. The 11 participants were: Ulf Andersson , Alexander Beliavsky , Maia Tschiburdanidse , Henrique Mecking , Lajos Portisch , Zoltán Ribli , Andreï Sokolov , Rafael Vaganian , Jan Timman , Alexander Chalifman and of course Mihai Șubă himself. The tournament was won by Khalifman with 7 points, Mihai Șubă finished next to last with 4 points.
