Florin Gheorghiu (born April 6, 1944 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian chess master .
Life
As a 13-year-old Gheorghiu won the Romanian youth championship, three years later, in 1960, he won the national championship for adults. A total of nine times (1960, 1962, 1964-1967, 1973, 1977 and 1987) he won the national championship and he was the leading player in Romania until the early 1990s. In 1963 he became the first Romanian junior world champion in Vrnjačka Banja . In the same year FIDE awarded him the title of International Master , and in 1965 the title of Grand Master .
After two unsuccessful attempts in the zone tournament (4th place each in Vrnjačka Banja 1967 and Athens 1969) he achieved four qualifications (2nd place in Helsinki 1972, 1st – 2nd place in Wraza 1975, 2nd – 5th in Warsaw 1979 and 1st – 2nd place in Budapest 1982) to the next stage in the World Cup elimination: He played in the interzonal tournaments Petrópolis 1973 (14th), in Manila 1976 (10th – 13th), in Riga 1979 (5th – 6th place) .) and in Moscow 1982 (12.).

He won the US Open three times in a row: 1979, 1980 (with John Fedorowicz ) and 1981 (with Larry Christiansen ).
He was very popular in his home country: A 1978 book Secretele marilor maeştri by Constantin Ștefaniu puts him on a par with Bobby Fischer and Anatoly Evgenyevich Karpov . Gheorghiu published a collection of his best games in 1980 under the title Partide alese .
Besides Ulf Andersson and Mihai Șubă, Gheorghiu is considered a pioneer and connoisseur of the hedgehog position .
His best historical rating prior to the introduction of the rating was 2661 in June and July 1968.
Team chess
Gheorghiu represented his country fourteen times at Chess Olympiads between 1962 and 1990 , including ten times on the first board, he also took part in the 1985 World Team Championships and five European Team Championships between 1965 and 1992.
His club in Romania is CS Progresul Bucharest . In Switzerland he played with SK Bern until 2000 , then until 2002 in the National League A with Schachfreunde Reichenstein , in the Bundesliga in 2001 with SK Aarau , in 2002 and 2003 with Niederrohrdorf , with whom he won the Swiss group championship in 2002 . Since 2015 he has played with the Echallens Chess Club in the National League A. He took part in the European Club Cup in 1986 and 1990 with IT Bucharest .
