Hans Franz Nägeli (* around 1497 in Aigle VD ; † January 9, 1579 in Bern ) was a Bernese statesman and general who became known as the conqueror of Vaud .

Life

Hans Franz Nägeli was born as the son of Hans Rudolf Nägeli and Elisabeth Sommer. In 1524 he married Ursula Stokar from Schaffhausen, and in 1545 he married Rosina Wyttenbach for the second time . From 1522 he belonged to the Bernese Grand Council , from 1529 also to the Small Council. He served as a captain in the Müsserkrieg and in the second Kappelenkrieg . In 1536, as Bernese field captain with 6,000 men , he conquered Vaud from the Savoy and ended the siege of the city of Geneva , which had just introduced the Reformation, expelled the bishop and renounced Savoy. In the subsequent peace negotiations, the educated Nägeli, who spoke German , French and Latin , mediated between Geneva and Savoy. He was a delegate from Bern to the Diet and from 1540 to 1568 mayor of Bern .

Nägeli was one third co-lord of Münsingen through inheritance and, from 1545, lord of Bremgarten through purchase. He owned houses on Gerechtigkeits- and today's Nägeligasse in Bern as well as various estates in Vaud.

Trivia

The town council named the street in Bern, where he owned a house, after him on November 19, 1877. A parapet statue of Nägeli stands on the facade of the main building of the Berner Kantonalbank .
