Life

Single successes

Ulf Andersson, 1983

In 1969 he became the Swedish individual champion. In 1970 he became international master , in 1972 grand master . He won the traditional Hastings tournament three times in a row : 1978, 1979 and 1980. His greatest successes came in the 1980s, when he made six top ten FIDE world rankings (his highest Elo rating then 2640). His tournament successes include victories in Dortmund in 1978, London in 1980 and 1982, Turin in 1982 and Reggio nell'Emilia in 1986.

In 1984 he played in London on the 1st board of the world selection in the match between the USSR and the rest of the world . He was narrowly defeated by the then world champion Anatoli Karpow (+0 = 3 −1).

In the 1990s, Andersson discovered correspondence chess for himself. In 1994 he took part in a distance tournament for the 50th anniversary of the Norwegian Correspondence Chess Federation and proved to be superior to all correspondence chess experts: with 11.5 / 14 he was the sole winner. The ICCF then awarded him the title of correspondence chess grandmaster. Andersson played a few other successful long-distance tournaments in the 1990s, after which his correspondence chess rating reached the record high of 2805. As of November 15, 2008, he is in second place in the correspondence chess world rankings with an Elo rating of 2737.

In 1996 he set a record in simultaneous chess : he played 310 games within 15 hours, 23 minutes, of which he won 268, drew 40 and lost only two.

Andersson, who has withdrawn from correspondence chess, has been playing blitz and bullet games in the ICC with great passion in recent years . With over 75,000 (as of December 2005) played games, he is considered one of the most enthusiastic grandmasters there.

He is known for his positionally solid style and is considered very strong especially in the endgame . He is also considered a pioneer and expert in hedgehog position .

He was ranked fourth in the FIDE world rankings for the whole of 1983.
