Tom Birger Wedberg (born November 26, 1953 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish chess player and journalist.

Life

Tom Wedberg comes from a well-known Swedish family. His father Anders Wedberg (1913–1978) was a professor of theoretical philosophy. His grandfather Birger Wedberg (1870-1945) was Justitieråd at the Supreme Court of Sweden and honorary member of the Swedish Academy , his great-grandfather Johan Otto Wedberg (1826-1912) was also Justitieråd and honorary member of the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien , a Stockholm academy of science. Justitieråd refers to a judge's office at the Swedish Supreme Court.

successes

In 1978 Tom Wedberg received the title of International Master . 1981 (shared) and 1982 he won the Politiken Cup in Copenhagen . In 1989/90 he won the Rilton Cup in front of Alexei Schirow in Stockholm . He has held the title of Grand Master since 1995 . He received the chess gideon , an award of the Swedish Chess Federation named after Gideon Ståhlberg , in 1995 and 2001. In 2000 he became the Swedish individual champion.

In February 2015 he was in 13th place in the Swedish Elo ranking.

As a chess author he wrote articles for the magazine New In Chess .

National team

With the Swedish national team, he took part in the Chess Olympiad six times ( 1978 , 1980 , 1982 , 1988 , 1990 and 1992 ) and three times in the European team championships (1980, 1989 and 2001).

societies

In Sweden Wedberg plays for the Stockholm club Wasa SK , with which he was part of the Swedish first division ( Elitserien ) for a long time , most recently in the 2009/10 season . With the Wasa SK he won the Swedish team championship in the seasons 1973/74 , 1986/87 , 1987/88 , 1988/89 , 1989/90 and 1990/91 and took part in the European Club Cup in 1988, 1990 and 1992 . In Germany he has been playing for SK Johanneum Eppendorf since 2012 , including in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2013/14 season.
