Johan Hellsten (born December 25, 1975 in Malmö ) is a Swedish chess player .

He was trained by Conny Holst (* 1955). In 1991 he became the Swedish U20 junior champion, in July 2006 he became the Swedish individual champion in Gothenburg .

He won the following tournaments (or was tied for first):

Since he has been teaching chess for several years at the Universidad de Tarapacá , a university in the Nor-Chilean desert city of Arica , since March 2003 , he plays many tournaments in South America. He had been in South America since 2002 and made contact there.

He took part in three Chess Olympiads for the Swedish national team: 1996 in Yerevan , 2004 in Calvià and 2006 in Turin . In all three tournaments he had a positive result (59.1%, 54.5% and 61.1%). At the European chess championships , in which he participated three times with the national team, he won a gold medal in Pula in 1997 for his result of 6.5 out of 8 on the fourth board (81.3%) and in 2005 in Gothenburg a bronze medal for his result of 5, 5 out of 8 on the second board (68.8%).

In Sweden he played for the Malmö club Limhamns SK , but he has also played in the Greek league. In the German federal chess league he played from 1997/98 to 2001/02 for the Neukölln chess friends .

In 1995 he became international master , since 2004 he has been holding the title of chess grandmaster . His Elo rating is 2550 (as of August 2014), but he is listed as inactive because he has not played a rated game since winning the tournament in Ambato, Ecuador in January 2009. With an Elo rating of 2550, he would be in fifth place in the Swedish Elo ranking. The brightest best previous Elo rating was 2592 in October 2006.

Hellsten opens almost exclusively with the move d2 – d4.
