Bengt Stellan Peter Brynell (born September 28, 1962 ) is a Swedish chess player .

Life

Stellan Brynell grew up in Malmö , where he learned to play chess from his father. At the age of ten he joined a chess club. When the family moved to the Limhamn-Djupadal district within Malmös, he switched to the Limhamns SK chess club , which is known for its intensive youth work. He was trained there by Conny Holst (* 1955). With the club Brynell was Swedish team champion in the 1982/83 and 2012/13 seasons and took part in the European Club Cup twice. He studied engineering but is a professional chess player.

In 1998 he became an international master . He achieved all three norms in tournaments this summer. In November 1998 he won the Owens-Corning Tournament in Wrexham . He has been a grandmaster since 2001 . He obtained the first standard for this in 1995 in Norway, the second in 1997 in Iceland. He was able to win the Malmö City Championship fourteen times (as of 2007). He won the Swedish individual championship twice: 1991 in Helsingborg and 2005 in Gothenburg . In July 2001 he won the tournament for Ulf Andersson's 50th birthday in Örebro together with Thomas Ernst . In December 2007 he won the Øbro Nytår tournament in Copenhagen . He won the Påskturneringen in Norrköping in March 2008. He won the Copenhagen Chess Challenge in June 2009 and again in June 2010.

With the Swedish national team he took part in five chess Olympiads ( 1992 and 1998 to 2004 ) with a total of 16 points from 33 games (+11 = 10 −12). At the 2012 Chess Olympiad , he was the non-playing team captain of both the Swedish men's and women's national teams. His six team European championship appearances (1989, 1999 to 2005 and 2011 ) show an overall result of 17.5 out of 35 (+11 = 13 −11).

In the German federal chess league he played since the 1998/99 season for Schachfreunde Berlin , which until November 2005 were still called Schachfreunde Neukölln . Brynell was registered for the Schachfreunde Berlin until 2011, but he was not used at all in the 2010/11 season and only in the second team in the 2009/10 season. He moved from Berlin to SSC Rostock 07 , with whom he played in the 1st Bundesliga in the 2014/15 season . In the 2018/19 season Brynell plays for Schachfreunde Schwerin in the Oberliga Nord. In Denmark he plays for the Græsteder club Skakklubben Nordkalotten , with which he also took part in the European Club Cup 2017. He has also played in the Icelandic team championship.

In January 2015 he was in 20th place in the Swedish Elo ranking.
