Chess composition

In 2004 Nunn won the 28th World Championship in Solving Chess Problems and Studies in Chalkidiki . At the same time, he fulfilled the final norm for the title of grand master in solving chess compositions. He repeated this success at the 31st World Championship in 2007 on Rhodes and the 34th World Championship in 2010 in Crete.

He is the third person to be awarded both a tournament chess grandmaster title and a grandmaster title in solving. His British compatriot Jonathan Mestel and the Israeli Ram Soffer succeeded in doing this before him .

White to move forces a draw

Template: checkerboard / maintenance / new

Seduction:

Immediate figure catch 1. Kf6? b3 2.Kg7 b2 3.Kxh8 b1D 4.Kg7 leads to a loss because after Qg1 + 5.Kf7 Qd4 6.Kg8 Qg4 + 7.Kf7 Qf5 + 8.Kg7 Qg5 + 9.Kf7 Qh6 10.Kg8 Qg6 + 11.Kh8 Black cancels the stalemate , e.g. As with Kc5 12. b6 DF7 13. b7 Qf8 matt .

Therefore, the superfluous white pawn must first be eliminated, which enables the stalemate to be lifted through its ability to move. This is done by penetrating the square of the black pawn with the threat of conquering it.

Solution:

1. Kd4! Kxb5 now the return
2. Ke5! b3 and now nothing stands in the way of the main plan.
3. Kf6 b2
4. Kg7 b1D
5. Kxh8 with a theoretical draw , because now, after the appearance of the black queen on g6, the stalemate cannot be lifted as in the seduction.
