Simon Kim Williams (born  November 30, 1979 in Guildford , Surrey ) is an English chess player . He has been a grandmaster since the beginning of 2009 and, in addition to his competitive activities, is also active as an author and editor of chess books and digital teaching materials.

Life

Simon Williams learned to play chess from his father at the age of six. He graduated from the University of Sussex with a degree in philosophy and cognitive science . He obtained the title of International Master in 1998 . In March 2008 he had reached the necessary standards for the grandmaster title , he reached the necessary Elo rating for this in January 2009.

In 2003 and 2009 he was runner-up at the British Chess Championships , and in 2005 he won the British Championship in Blitz Chess . He also won the Masters at the Bunratty International Chess Festival in Ireland in 2006 and the open ranking of the Swiss championship in 2009 with a half-point advantage over Viktor Kortschnoi , who became Swiss champion in this tournament. Together with Gawain Jones , Simon Williams also shared first place at the 2011 FIDE Open as part of the London Chess Classic .

Simon Williams has played for various teams in the Four Nations Chess League since 1996 . He was also active in the French team championship in the 2010/11 , 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons for CE de Rueil Malmaison . In the 2013/14 season he was also part of the German Chess League for SC Viernheim and the Norwegian Eliteserien for the Vålerenga Sjakklubb team , but was not used in either team.

Simon Williams also works as a chess commentator and as an author and editor of chess books and digital teaching materials such as DVDs and web videos on the video portal YouTube . In addition to publishing with established publishers and companies such as ChessBase , he also markets his works and those of other chess players under his own label, Ginger GM Publishing . He also uses the name GingerGM , which refers to his reddish hair color, for other Internet activities such as his YouTube channel and Twitter account .
