Maia Chiburdanidze ( Georgia მაია ჩიბურდანიძე , Russian Майя Григорьевна Чибурданидзе , Maja Grigoryevna Tschiburdanidse * 17th January 1961 in Kutaisi , Imereti , then Georgian SSR of the Soviet Union ) is a Georgian chess player and the sixth world chess champion . She started for the USSR until the independence of Georgia in 1991.

In 1977 Chiburdanidze won the USSR women's championship , at the age of 17 she won the title fight for the women's world chess championship in 1978 in a competition against Nona Gaprindashvili and defended it in 1981 against Nana Alexandria , in 1984 against Irina Levitina , in 1986 against Jelena Achmylowskaya and in 1988 against Nana Iosseliani . In 1991 she finally lost the title to the Chinese Xie Jun . In 1979 she won the 2nd International German Women's Championship in Bad Kissingen .

As the second woman after Gaprindashvili, she achieved the title of Grand Master in 1984 . She is the first woman to win a category IX grandmaster tournament unbeaten: in 1985 in Banja Luka , she won in front of 13 men, including 8 grandmasters.

Her niece Sopio Nikoladze is the international champion of women in chess. In addition to her chess career, Chiburdanidze completed a medical degree and practiced as an ophthalmologist .

From 1978 to 2004 she took part in all 14 women's chess Olympiads , the 15th participation followed in 2008 . She always played on the top board (until 1990 the Soviet, then the Georgian team). With the team, Chiburdanidze won in 1978, 1980 , 1982 , 1984 , 1986 , 1992 , 1994 , 1996 and 2008, reached second place in 1988 , 1990 and 2000, and third place in 1998 . In the individual evaluation she achieved the best individual result on the top board in 1978, 1980, 1992 and 2008 (in 1992 she received another gold medal for the best Elo performance of all participants), in 1986 and 1998 the second best individual result on the first board (she also achieved the third best Elo performance of all participants) and in 1982, 1994 and 2002 the third best individual result on the top board (in 2002 she also won a bronze medal for the third best Elo performance of all participants).

1997 Chiburdanidze took part with the Georgian women selection in the team world championship . She participated in the women's team championship in 2007 and 2009.

In addition, Chiburdanidze represented Georgia at the European Women's Team Championships in 1997, 2005 and 2007. In 1997 she won with the team and achieved both the best individual result on the top board and the best Elo performance of all participants, in 2005 she reached second place with the team and scored in the individual evaluation, the best Elo performance of all participants and the second-best individual result on the top board.

In the Soviet club championship, Chiburdanidze played on the girls' board in 1974 and 1976, and in 1980 and 1982 on the women's board of Dinamo . At the European Club Cup women she participated six times. In 1995 she won the competition with Merani Tbilisi , from 2006 to 2008 she played for MIKA Yerevan . With Yerevan she won the competition in 2006 and reached third place in 2007, and in 2006 she also achieved the best individual result on the first board. In 2009 and 2010 she played for Samaia Tbilisi , with whom she finished third in 2009.

Others

Chiburdanidze is listed as inactive at FIDE, since she has not played an Elo-rated game since a tournament of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2009-2011 held in Doha in February 2011 . In February 2020 she was made an honorary member of FIDE at the FIDE Congress in Abu Dhabi.
