Zurab Sturua

Zurab Sturua ( Georgian ზურაბ სთურუა ; in the World Chess Federation FIDE Zurab Sturua ; born June 8, 1959 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian chess player .

He won the championships of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1975, 1977, 1981, 1984 and 1985 and represented his home country at the Chess Olympiads in 1992 , 1994 , 1996 , 1998 , 2000 and 2002 , with the second best individual result on the third board in 1998 in Elista and at the European Team Championships in 1992, 1997 and 2001.

In 1991 and 1996 he won the Master Open of the Biel Chess Festival. In 1991 he was awarded the title of Grand Master by FIDE . In 2014 he became senior world champion in the over 50 group in Katerini . The next year he won the European senior championship in the over 50 group in Eretria .

Sturua's Elo rating is 2536 (as of May 2015), and he reached his highest rating of 2605 in January 1999. In the meantime, he has also worked as a chess trainer and looks after Keti Zazalaschwili , among others .

Sturua is married to the chess grandmaster Nino Gurieli .
