Merab Gagunashvili ( Georgian მერაბ გაგუნაშვილი ; born January 3, 1985 in Tbilisi ), spelling for the World Chess Federation FIDE Gagunashvili , is a Georgian chess player .

Life

He learned the game of chess as a child from his grandmother. When he started school his talent was recognized and he got a trainer. As a result, he won the Georgian youth championships in the U12 and U14 age groups. He received the title of Grand Master at the age of 17, after a shared 2nd place at the European Championships in 2002 in Batumi .

In 2004 he became Georgian individual champion. After top placements in individual tournaments, he won the traditional Hastings tournament in early 2007 . In January 2015, he is number 6 on the Georgian Elo list.

Team chess

With the Georgian national team, he took part in five Chess Olympiads between 2002 and 2012 . Gagunashvili was most successful in his first Olympic mission in Bled in 2002 . With 6.5 points from 8 games, he achieved an Elo performance of 2786; Georgia ended up in fourth place. Gagunashvili also played at the team world championships in 2005 and five team European championships between 2003 and 2013, where he reached third place with the team in Plovdiv in 2003 and achieved the second-best individual result of the reserve players.

In the German Federal Chess League he played for SC Kreuzberg in the 2007/08 season . In the Dutch master class , Gagunashvili had individual appearances for hotels.nl/Groningen in the seasons 2004/05 and 2007/08 , in the Chinese team championship he played in 2005 for Wenzhou Law School and in 2008 for Wuxi Tiancheng Real Estate . At the European Club Cup Gagunaschwili took 2003 Tbilisi City and 2005 with I & A Tbilisi part.
