Ihor Kowalenko ( Latvian Igors Kovaļenko , Ukrainian Ігор Коваленко ; born December 29, 1988 in Novomoskovsk ) is a Latvian chess grandmaster who played for Ukraine until 2013 . In 2008 he was named International Master after having fulfilled a total of five standards between April and November 2007; the title of Grand Master was awarded to him in 2011, at which time he had already fulfilled five standards. In 2013 and 2014, Kovalenko won the Latvian Chess Championship ; In 2014 he played for Latvia at the Chess Olympiad and in 2015 at the European Team Championship . In August 2015 he reached the Elo rating of 2700 points . In January 2016 he won the 25th Keres Memorial , a well- attended rapid chess tournament in Tallinn , with 7 points from 9 games.

In the Polish Ekstraliga he plays for UKS ROTMISTRZ Grudziądz , he won the Ukrainian team championship in 2012 with the team from the Law Academy Charkiw . In France he plays for the Saint-Quentin club Les Tours de Haute Picardie , in Germany he has been playing at SC Viernheim since the 2016/17 season , initially in the 2nd Bundesliga and since 2018 in the 1st Bundesliga .
