Michail Tal was the only Latvian world champion to date in 1960 .

The list of Latvian chess players contains chess players who are or were eligible to play for the Latvian Chess Federation and who meet at least one of the following conditions:

General

In close chess , ten grandmasters, twelve international masters (including the only woman Olita Rause ), six women's grandmasters and four international women's champions are eligible to play for the Latvian Chess Federation. Six grandmasters, four international masters, one women's grandmaster and two international women's champions are no longer eligible to play for the Latvian Chess Federation, four grandmasters, one honorary grandmaster and one international master have already passed away. Michail Tal was world champion from 1960 to 1961 .

In correspondence chess, eight Latvian players have earned the title of Grand Master (among them the only woman Olita Rause), eleven that of an Honored International Master, thirteen that of an International Master and two that of a Women's Grand Master. Of these, four Grand Masters and three International Masters have already passed away. Jānis Vitomskis won the 28th European Correspondence Chess Championship.

The Latvian Individual Championships were played 83 times, the Latvian Women's Championship 74 times. The record champion is Jānis Klovāns , who won the LSSR championship nine times; Vladimir Petrovs won the championship of independent Latvia the most with four titles. Milda Lauberte won the women's competition most often with 13 titles; the women's championship of independent Latvia was won by Laura Rogule with ten titles the most.

Another six Latvian players had a historic rating of over 2,499 before June 1971.

  • Historical Elo : For players who have neither FIDE nor ICCF titles and have never won a Latvian championship, the highest historical Elo number achieved before July 1971 , provided it is at least 2500.
  • Other associations : For players who were sooner or later eligible to play for at least one other association, this indicates these associations with the periods of eligibility to play (if known). Changes of association as a result of the Latvian independence in 1918 and 1991 or the annexation of Latvia in World War II are not listed.
