Māris Krakops (born April 3, 1978 ) is a Latvian chess player .

Life

Māris Krakops graduated from the University of Latvia in Riga with a law degree . After graduating, he worked in a law firm as an insolvency advisor. In 2001 he started as an assistant to a corporate lawyer at Linstow Center Management, a Riga-based company that manages shopping centers in Latvia and Norway. In 2003 he became head of the legal department there.

As a 12-year-old, he took part in the last Soviet U20 championship in 1990. At the U14 World Cup in 1994 in Szeged , Māris Krakops was second behind Péter Lékó and in front of Rustam Kasimjanov . In 1998 he won the Latvian Individual Championship in Riga in a final against Juzefs Petkēvičs . He won the Troll Masters in Gausdal in 2000 in a tie-break ahead of Igor Rausis .

With the Latvian national team he took part in the chess Olympiads in 1998 , 2000 and 2002 with a positive overall result of 14.5 points from 24 games, as well as in the European team championships in 1997, 1999 and 2001, where he won an individual silver medal for his result of 5 in 2001 in León , Received 5 points from 8 games on the third board. He achieved victories against, among others, Stuart Conquest and Ján Markoš . At the European Club Cup 1997 he took part with Baltika Liepāja , but the team failed in the preliminary round held in Eupen , although Krakops won all games. He played club chess in Germany in the late 1990s for the Enger-Spenge chess community .

In 1994 Māris Krakops received the title of International Master and has been a Grand Master since 1998 . His Elo rating is 2510 (as of November 2018), but he is considered inactive because he has not played a rated game since the Four Nation Chess Challenger tournament held in Oslo in February 2008 . The highest rating was 2530, which he reached in July 1997, January 1999 and January 2002.
