Aivars Petrowitsch Gipslis (born February 8, 1937 in Riga , † April 13, 2000 in Berlin-Köpenick ) was a Latvian chess grandmaster.
Life

Aivars Gipslis won the championship of the Latvian SSR eight times , namely 1955 to 1957, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964 and 1966. Six times he participated in the USSR championship and finished third at the 34th championship in Tbilisi 1966-1967.
In 1963 he won a tournament in Bad Liebenstein together with Lev Polugajewski , in 1964 he was tournament winner in Pécs together with Milko Bobozow . In 1963 he became an international master . In 1967 he finished second at the Alekhine Memorial in Moscow behind Leonid Stein . In the same year he became a grandmaster .
He won other tournaments in 1975 in Vrnjačka Banja , 1979 in Calcutta and 1987 in Jūrmala . With the Soviet national team Gipslis won the European team championship in 1970 in Kapfenberg , with the Latvian national team he took part in the 1993 world team championship in Lucerne .
Gipslis coached Mikhail Tal , Nona Gaprindashvili (1966–1979) and the USSR women's team at the 1972, 1974, 1978, 1980 and 1982 Chess Olympiads .
Most recently Gipslis played for the chess club TSG Oberschöneweide in the major league. At the Dortmund Schachtagen 1998 he was second in the Open A. On January 30, 2000 he suffered a heart attack during a game of chess. He died of the consequences on April 13, 2000 in the Berlin-Köpenick hospital.
Correspondence chess
In 1992 he was awarded the title of International Master in correspondence chess , and in 1995 the title of Grand Master. His highest rating in correspondence chess was 2560 in 1997.
