List of chess players with an Elo rating of 2700 or more

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magnus Carlsen achieved the highest rating to date with 2882

This list of chess players with an Elo rating of 2700 or more includes all chess players who have achieved a top rating of at least 2700 according to FIDE . These players are sometimes unofficially referred to as super-grandmasters . The Elo number, which stands for the skill level of a player, was introduced in 1970 (the retrospectively calculated historical Elo numbers are not taken into account here ).

Magnus Carlsen achieved the highest rating to date, 2882, in May 2014. With Garri Kasparow , Wesselin Topalow , Wladimir Kramnik , Viswanathan Anand , Levon Aronjan , Fabiano Caruana , Alexander Grishchuk , Hikaru Nakamura , Maxime Vachier-Lagrave , Wesley So , Şəhriyar Məmməendy and Ding Lmmendy succeeded twelve other players to achieve an Elo value over 2800. In addition to the best Elo number, the list also names the year in which the player first achieved or exceeded an Elo value of 2700, and the year in which he was awarded the Grandmaster title. In addition, the year of birth and the country of origin of the player and any world championship titles are given. Up to and including April 2020, 121 players had an Elo rating of at least 2700, including Judit Polgár as the only woman .

Explanation

  • Rank: Indicates the order of the players. This is determined by the best Elo number.
  • Name: gives the name of the player.
  • Country: Names the country for whose chess association the player is eligible to play. In the case of deceased players, the country for whose chess association the player was eligible to play is indicated.
  • Life dates: State the year in which the player was born and, if applicable, the year of death.
  • Elo: Name the best Elo number. This is based on the ranking list published regularly by FIDE. FIDE published a list of the best every year up to and including 1980. From 1981 to 1999, FIDE published two best lists a year and since 2000 four a year. Between July 2009 and July 2012 there were six updates per year, and since August 2012 there has been a new Elo rating every month. The Elo numbers were calculated in steps of five until 1998, after which they were calculated to a whole number.
The Elo number is said to be inflated , which is why Elo values from earlier years of the rating system are not to be equated directly with the Elo values achieved today. The list includes two players, Fischer and Tal, who had a top rating in the early years of the rating.
  • Year: Name the year in which this best performance was achieved.
  • 2700: Calls the year in which the player first achieved or exceeded an Elo rating of 2700.
  • GM: Name the year the player became a grandmaster . This title is awarded for life by the World Chess Federation FIDE and requires a minimum Elo rating of 2500.
  • FIDE: Mention the official player site at FIDE.
  • World champion: states the period in which the player was chess world champion . If the period is in brackets, the player won a world championship organized by FIDE between 1993 and 2005, but the winners were not considered the best players in the world because the reigning classic world champion and other top players did not take part.
