The sun or black banded cardinalfish ( Ostorhinchus aureus , syn .: Apogon aureus ) is a small, 10 to 14.5 centimeter long marine fish found in the Red Sea and in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Izu Islands south of Japan , New Guinea , Australia and New Caledonia .

It is copper-colored, the top is lighter. A black, blue-framed band runs from the tip of the snout to the eyes and just behind them. A blue line runs along the upper jaw. The mouth is large and above all . The caudal fin root has a broad, black transverse band or a black spot.

Way of life

The black banded cardinalfish live in crevices and caves or between the branches of hard corals ( acropores ) in lagoons and protected coral reefs , at depths of one to 40 meters. During the summer months and autumn, the sun cardinalfish form shoals with Ostorhinchus apogonoides . The two species separate in spring and winter. Like all cardinalfish, the fish are mouthbrooders . They feed on zooplankton .
