Vüqar Həşimov or Vugar Gashimov , (born July 24, 1986 in Baku , Azerbaijani SSR , Soviet Union ; † January 11, 2014 in Heidelberg , Germany ) was an Azerbaijani chess player .
Life and Achievements
Həşimov learned to play chess from his father when he was six years old. Trained , he was in his youth from the International Master Anar Allahverdiyev . Since 2002 Vüqar Həşimov has been a grandmaster after becoming an international champion in 1999 . In the summer of 2009 he trained with the Moldovan grandmaster Viorel Iordăchescu .
In 1996 he finished second behind P. Harikrishna at the U10 World Championship in Cala Galdana . In March 1999 he attracted attention when he won the U16 competition of the Kasparov Cup . Before that he had won three Azerbaijani youth championships: 1995, 1996 and 1998. He won tournaments in Alushta in March and April 2002, in Athens in March 2005 ( Acropolis tournament ) and the Masters in Abu Dhabi in August 2006. In February 2008 he won the 24th Cappelle La Grande Open after a fine evaluation , in May 2008 he shared the victory at the FIDE Grand Prix in Baku with Wang Yue and Magnus Carlsen . At the European Rapid Championship in December 2010, he finished second behind Zoltán Almási .
With the Azerbaijani U16 national team, he was third at the U16 Chess Olympiad 2000 on the first board in Artek . With the Azerbaijani national team he took part in four chess Olympiads ( 2002 , 2004 , 2006 and 2008 ) with a total of 28.5 points from 41 games (+18 = 17 -6). At the European Team Championships 2007 in Heraklion , the Azerbaijani national team received the bronze medal with him on the third board, he won the European Team Championships 2009 in Novi Sad easily on the second board, at the European Championships 2011 in Porto Carras he took second place with Azerbaijan and received one Bronze medal for his result on the second board.
It was not until 2005 that he played internationally in club teams, namely in French (in the 2005/06 and 2009/10 seasons for Évry Grand Roque , in the 2007/08 season for Philidor Mulhouse ) and Spanish (in 2007 for the international chess school Kasparov-Marcote , 2008 for SCC de Sabadell , 2009 and 2010 again for Marcote , with whom he became Spanish team champion in 2010 ), Iranian, Turkish, Russian and Israeli leagues. In Iran he played for the Petroshimi Bandare Emam club in 2006 and for Sanatenaft Abadan in the 2007 season . With Beşiktaş Jimnastik K. he was Turkish team champion in 2007, in 2008 he played for Adana Truva . In 2005 he took on for the Turkish club Marmaris Munic. SC participated in the European Club Cup in Saint-Vincent, Italy, where he received a silver medal for his 85.7% performance on the first board. Playing for the Israeli Ashdod Illit Chess Club , he received an individual gold medal at the European Club Cup 2009 in Ohrid for his score of 5 out of 6 on the second board with an Elo rating of 2883. In Russia he played for Shatar-Metropol Buryatia . In Germany he played for Werder Bremen since the 2009/10 season .
His last Elo rating was 2737, his highest was 2761 in January 2012. His highest position on the FIDE world rankings was sixth in November 2009. On the Internet chess server ICC he had under the name Diadematus with an ICC lightning rating of 3675 holds the top position. As of June 2007, he was the best player in bullet chess on the ChessBase server with the highest rating to date of 3358.
Həşimov was treated for years for epilepsy due to a misdiagnosis . As a result, he said he couldn't spend as much time training and preparation as other world-class players. It turned out that he had a brain tumor .
His participation in the FIDE Grand Prix 2012-2013 , for which he was qualified due to his Elo rating, he canceled for health reasons. The Tata Steel chess tournament in January 2012 was his last chess tournament, his last Elo-rated game he had on February 5, 2012 on the 9th match day of the 2011/12 Bundesliga season . He was then listed as an inactive player by FIDE.
Death and reactions
Vüqar Həşimov succumbed to a brain tumor in a hospital in Heidelberg on the night of January 11, 2014. Həşimov's body was buried in the Fəxri Xiyaban cemetery in Baku.
The news of Həşimov's death was met with sadness in the chess world. Former world champion Garry Kasparov expressed his respect for Həşimov's high chess performance with regard to his health problems. Azerbaijani President İlham Əliyev praised Həşimov's services to the sport as “irreplaceable”. Həşimov made "unprecedented contributions to the development of the Azerbaijani chess school".
From April 19 to 30, 2014, the Vugar Gashimov Memorial took place in Şəmkir , a double-round tournament with six participants, including world champion Magnus Carlsen. This has been held six times so far (2019).
Play style
Həşimov was considered a very talented and creative player with a dynamic style of play. With the white pieces he was an expert on the Spanish opening , with the black pieces he often successfully played the Benoni defense, which is considered risky .
