Porto Carras ( Greek Πόρτο Καρράς ) is a hotel complex in Sithonia on the Chalkidiki peninsula . The facility was built by the shipowner Giannis Carras (Γιάννης Καρράς John Carras), who commissioned the Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius with the planning. The complex is still in its original state today and is considered a good example of functionalist architecture from the 1970s.

history

Large hotel complexes were built in Greece up to the 1960s on the one hand by international chains and on the other hand by the state Xenia program . John Carras commissioned Walter Gropius with the planning, but he died in 1969; The building was then completed by the employees of his office The Architects Collaborative .

The hotel has proven itself as a venue for international congresses and events, including a 2003 summit of EU heads of government and state.

The complex consists of the two 5-star hotels Meliton and Sithonia as well as the Village Inn bungalow complex . Next to the hotel is the Porto Carras winery, which is also part of the complex.
