Shamkir Chess

Shamkir Chess (also known as Vugar Gashimov Memorial ) is a chess tournament that takes place in Şəmkir (English: Shamkir ) in honor of Vüqar Həşimov , who died in January 2014 .

2014

The first edition of the tournament took place from April 19-30, 2014.

In group A six participants played a double round tournament, in group B ten participants played a single round tournament. The game was played with the classic thinking time (120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes plus 30 seconds per move for the rest of the game). Draw offers before move 40 were not allowed. The A tournament had category 22 with an average rating of 2780 . The prize fund was 100,000 euros for the A group and 30,000 euros for the B group . The venue was the Heydar Aliyev Center . Faiq Həsənov acted as the main referee .

2015

The second edition took place from April 16 to 26, 2015 as a round-robin tournament with 10 participants. The originally invited Teymur Rəcəbov canceled for health reasons and was replaced by Michael Adams. The prize fund was 100,000 euros.

The third edition of the tournament took place from May 25th to June 5th, 2016. It won Məmmədyarov after a playoff against Caruana. The prize fund was 73,000 euros, of which 15,000 euros went to the winner.

From April 20 to May 1, 2017, So, Kramnik, Karjakin, Məmmədyarov, Adams, Harikrishna, Eljanow, Wojtaszek, Topalow and R biscəbov played. The Elo average was 2765, thus category 21 was achieved. The prize fund totaled 100,000 euros, 25,000 of which went to the winner.

The fifth edition of the tournament took place from April 19-28, 2018. The prize fund totaled 100,000 euros, 30,000 of which went to the winner. Originally, Vladimir Kramnik was also invited. He canceled at short notice and was replaced by Radosław Wojtaszek.
