Ding Liren ( Chinese  丁立人 ; Dīng Lìrén, born October 24, 1992 in Wenzhou , Zhejiang Province ) is a Chinese chess grandmaster .

Life

Ding Liren learned to play chess at the age of 4 in his hometown. Just one year later he won the U6 state championship and in the following years won several national youth championships in different age groups. Both at the U-10 World Championships in Heraklion 2002, as well as at the U-12 World Championships in Heraklion 2004, he reached the shared 1st – 2nd Place, after fine scoring he finished second both times. At the 8th open Asian championship in Subic in May 2009, he reached the 24th place and fulfilled his first grandmaster norm . At the Chinese Individual Championship in Xinghua in 2009, after 9 rounds, he was still 1.5 points behind the table leader Wang Hao (then Elo 2724). In the tenth round, Ding Liren won his game against Wang Hao. In the eleventh and final round, Wang Hao lost, then 16-year-old Ding Liren won his game against Zhou Jianchao (then Elo 2668) with Black without having to make a move: Zhou Jianchao was late. With that, the untitled Ding Liren with an Elo rating of 2458 at that time with an Elo performance of 2812 points became Chinese Master and fulfilled his second grandmaster norm. He repeated this success in 2011 and 2012. At the Aeroflot Open in Moscow in 2011 he reached 20th place in Group A with an Elo performance of 2703. In April 2011 he again won the national championship. In 2012 he defended his title and won in Xinghua with 8 points from 11 games (+5 = 6 −0). At the Junior World Championships 2012 in Athens, Ding Liren took 3rd place.

In 2015, Ding Liren achieved 5th place at the Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zee with 8.5 / 13 points, half a point behind the tournament winner and world champion Magnus Carlsen . In July 2015, Ding Liren won a match against Boris Gelfand in Wenzhou with 3: 1 (+2 = 2 −0).

After finishing school, Ding Liren began studying law at Peking University .

Ding Liren has consistently topped the Chinese rating list since January 2015.

In April 2017 he won the Shenzhen Chess Masters with a chess performance of 6.5 / 10 points ahead of Anish Giri and Peter Swidler . As part of his qualification for the 2018 Candidates Tournament in Berlin, in addition to his participation in the 2017 World Chess Cup , he took part in the FIDE Grand Prix 2017 and took fourth place in the overall ranking. Among other things, he won the Grand Prix in Moscow and finished third at the chess tournament in Mallorca .

On September 21, 2017, Ding Liren was the first Chinese to qualify for the Candidates Tournament by beating Wesley So in the semi-finals of the Chess World Cup . In the final he was only defeated in the fast games against Levon Aronjan . Ding Liren finished the Candidates' tournament unbeaten in fourth place out of eight players.

On May 31, 2018, Ding Liren was injured in a bicycle accident in Norway and had to undergo hip surgery. As a result, he was eliminated from the current tournament Altibox Norway Chess .

Elo development

National team

Ding Liren has been part of the Chinese national team since 2011. He has since participated in the 2012 , 2014 , 2016 and 2018 Chess Olympiads . He won the gold medal with the Chinese team in 2014 and 2018. In the individual competition, he won the bronze medal on the second board in 2014 and the gold medal on the first board in 2018. He also took part in the 2011 team championships in Ningbo and 2013 in Antalya (in which the Chinese team took second place) and the Asian team championships in Zaozhuang in 2012 and in Tabriz in 2014 (which China won, with Ding Liren also having the best individual result in 2014 on the top board) participated.
