from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sinquefield Cup has been a chess tournament for world class grandmasters in St. Louis that has been held annually at the Saint Louis Chess Club since 2013 , named after the American businessman and chess patron Rex Sinquefield (* 1944) and his wife Jeanne. Initially, the Sinquefield Cup was held as a double-round tournament with a classic time limit, in 2013 with four participants and in 2014 with six. The 2014 Sinquefield Cup caused a particular sensation in the chess world , when Fabiano Caruana won the first seven games in a row and in the end won the tournament by three points.

The Sinquefield Cup has been part of the Grand Chess Tour tournament series since 2015 , together with the London Chess Classic and other tournaments. According to the regulations, it has since been played as a one-round tournament with ten participants. For the first time, 12 players took part in the 2019 Sinquefield Cup, including world champion Magnus Carlsen and vice world champion Fabiano Caruana.
