Zhang Zhong ( Chinese  章 鍾 , Pinyin Zhāng Zhōng ; born September 5, 1978 in Chongqing ) is a Chinese chess player who played for the Singapore Chess Federation from 2007 to 2017 and who became a Singaporean citizen.

Life

Zhang, grand master in chess , learned the rules of chess as an eight year old. In 1996 he finished second at the Junior World Championships . In 2001 he won the Chinese championship and reached the same year in the KO World Championship of FIDE in Moscow the third round, where he Vesselin Topalov with 0.5: 1.5 succumbed. In 2003 he won the B tournament in Wijk aan Zee by three points and one year later he took part in the traditional elite tournament at the same place. In 2005 he was Asian champion. At the 2005 World Chess Cup he defeated Mikhail Kobalija in the first round , but failed in the second round to Ivan Sokolov .

His Elo rating is 2614 (as of December 2014), which puts him at the top of the Singapore ranking by a large margin. His highest rating to date was 2667 in July 2001.

He is married to Li Ruofan , who holds both the title of International Master and that of a Women's Grandmaster .

National team

Zhang participated in nine Chess Olympiads , 1996 , 1998 , 2002 , 2004 and 2006 for China, 2010 , 2012 , 2014 and 2016 for Singapore. His greatest success was second place with the Chinese team in 2006. In addition, he reached second place at the 2005 team world championships both with the Chinese team and in the individual standings on the fourth board and took part in four Asian team championships. With China he reached second place in the team standings in 1995 and won the individual standings on the second substitute board, finished third in the individual standings on the third board in 1999 and won in 2003 with the team. He took part with Singapore for the first time in 2012.

In the Chinese Team Championship, Zhang Zhong played for Hebei from 2005 to 2008 , for Chongqing Mobile in 2009 and for Beijing Beiao in 2016 .
