Michail Robertowitsch Kobalija ( Russian Михаил Робертович Кобалия , spelling at the World Chess Federation FIDE Mikhail Kobalia ; born May 3, 1978 ) is a Russian chess player and coach.

Success as a teenager

As a teenager he attended the Moscow Pioneer Chess School of Alexander Mazia.

At the U16 European Championships in 1994 in Băile Herculane , he finished second, at the U18 World Championships in 1995 in Guarapuava third, in 1996 in Cala Galdana second. He finished second again at the U18 European Championships in 1996 in Rimavská Sobota .

Success as an adult

On the fourth board of the Russia II team, he took part in the 1998 Chess Olympiad in Elista . There he managed to draw games against Alexander Morosewitsch , Smbat Lputjan , Jeroen Piket and Ruslan Ponomarjow in wins against Kenny Solomon and Joseph Gallagher and a defeat against K. Sasikiran . A year later he played for the first Russian national team at the European Team Championships in Batumi on the third board with a positive result of 4.5 points from 7 games. At the Russian individual championship in Moscow in 1999, he reached the semifinals and was eliminated from Konstantin Sakajew . In 2001 he won the Chigorin Memorial in Saint Petersburg . At the FIDE World Championship 2001/2002 in Moscow he defeated Konstantin Assejew (3.0: 1.0) in the first round , but was eliminated in the second round against Michael Adams with 1.5: 0.5. At the individual European championship in 2003 in Silivri , he was eighth, one point behind the winner. At the FIDE World Cup in Tripoli in 2004 , he won the first round against Sergei Karjakin (1.5: 0.5), but failed in the second round to Alexander Beliavsky (1.5: 2.5). At the 2005 World Chess Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk , he was eliminated in the first round against Zhang Zhong (1.5: 2.5). In 2005 he won the master's tournament at the International Chess Festival in Biel / Bienne . At the 2009 World Chess Cup , again in Khanty-Mansiysk, he was eliminated again in the first round, this time against Chanda Sandipan (0.5: 1.5). At the Chess World Cup 2011 in Chanty-Mansiysk he failed in the first round to Igor Lyssy (1: 3), at the Chess World Cup 2013 in Tromsø he survived the first round with a 2.5: 1.5 win against Denis Chismatullin , but lost in the second round with the same result to the eventual tournament winner Wladimir Kramnik .

In the German Chess League he was registered for SG Porz in the 2006/07 season , he played three games, all of which he won. Otherwise he played in the 1st Chinese league ( 2009 for the Bank of Qingdao , 2013 for Chongqing ), in the Bosnian Premijer Liga (runner-up in Neum in 2002 with ŠK Kiseljak ) and that of the United Arab Emirates as well as in the Spanish 2nd league . In Iran he is active for the Fajr Shams Chess Club , with which he reached third place at the 1st Asian Club Cup 2008 in al-Ain while playing on the first board . In the Arab League he played for the Dubai team . At the European Club Cups 2002 and 2003 he played for the Russian club Tomsk-400 , at the Club Cup 2008 for TPS Saransk , in the Russian team championship in between for Norilski Nikel Norilsk . He has also played for a Moscow city selection. In the Spanish team championship he played in 2007 for CA Cuna de Dragones-Ajoblanco Mérida .

Mikhail Kobalija was part of Garry Kasparov's secondary team for a while . In 2012 Kobalija was awarded the title of FIDE Senior Trainer. At FIDE he is Secretary & Youth Director of the Events Commission (EVE).

In 1995 he became International Master , and since 1996 he has held the title of Grand Master .
